Why your band needs a promo video
I’ve been in the live music "business" for over 25 years. Along with being a videographer, I've also been a guitarist playing shows throughout the Midwest with various bands and artists for almost 3 decades. As a musician, I’ve played countless gigs at bars, clubs, corporate events, weddings, you name it. And in that time, I’ve learned many things. One of those things is the answer to this very important question. That question is, “Why does my band need a promo video?”. And here is your answer.
A quality band promo video is going to get you better, higher paying gigs, guaranteed.
The investment into it now is going to pay off and be profitable for you for years to come. Without one, you are really doing yourself and your band a disservice. It's a digital world we live in, and if a band or artist does not have an online video presence, you are substantially getting left behind and missing out on exposure and income. Quality is the keyword here. Professional and cinematic go a very long way, and will make you look like you are legit and can put on a hell of a show. A cell phone doesn't cut it, bad audio doesn't cut it, going cheap just doesn't cut it. At all. Quality, professional looking work does. Period. However, that also brings up another question to ask.
"What are venues looking for when watching a band promo video?" These three things.
-
A packed house
-
A packed dance floor
-
People having a good time
Your genre of music doesn’t matter. Your talent level doesn’t matter (much). If you can bring in patrons to the establishment and in turn, bring in more revenue for the business, you’re in, and you can get well paid. But if you don’t have a band promo video to show off, good luck with that. You’re already behind in the game for 2026 and beyond.
I recommend a video 2 to 4 minutes in length that gets straight to the point and shows off your strongest material. Anything more than that is overkill and you’re just stroking your own ego at that point. Most viewers stop watching after 10 seconds. And then half that are left drop off after 30 seconds. If you can get them watching for a minute or more, you're golden. Are you a cover band? Show off the mega hits. Are you an original act? Show off your catchiest tunes. Entertainment value comes first and it's a very big first. Everything else second. How bad do you want this vision to come to life? Make the investment and get it done and never look back.
